Dr. Carol Lee Hamrin is a Research Professor at George Mason
University in Fairfax, Virginia, and has taught at The Johns
Hopkins University's School of Advanced International
Studies.She also is a consultant on training projects for the
development of China's non-profit sector.She became the senior
China research specialist at the Department of State through
25years of public service, where she earned the esteemed
Secretary of State's Career Achievement Award. In 2003, she
received the Center for Public Justice Leadership Award for
outstanding public service. Dr. Hamrin is an expert on
contempor ary Chinese social and cultural change, human rights,
religion and civil society, and US-China relations.
Dr. Hamrin has published many book chapters and journal
articles; her books include

in Deng's China (co-edited with Suisheng Zhao, M.E. Sharpe,
