Social psychology, especially identity and self-esteem; sociology of mental health; life course contexts, development, and transitions; and sociology of youth

Dr. Owens joined the faculty at Purdue University in 2000 after 11 years at the Indiana University, Indianapolis.  He has published nearly three dozen scientific articles and chapters in journals such as the American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Social Psychology Quarterly, and the Journal of Health and Social Behavior.  To date, he has published one monograph untitled From Adolescence to Adulthood in the Vietnam Era (Springer), edited three scholarly books (Cambridge, Minnesota, Kluwer/Plenum), and was the editor-in-chief of Advances in Life Course Research from 1999-2008.  He has presented numerous papers at both international and national conferences.  His research focuses on mental health and self-concept outcomes within and across the first three decades of the life course.  In addition, he regularly teaches large-enrollment Introduction to Sociology, as well as graduate-level theory courses.
