Jeremy Straughn received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2001 and joined the faculty at Purdue University in 2004.

Dr. Straughn’s research has focused on national identity, social attitudes, and political behavior in Europe and the United States. Recent publications include “‘Taking the State at Its Word’: The Arts of Consentful Contention in the German Democratic Republic” (AJS 2005; winner, Clifford Geertz Award for best article in the sociology of culture, 2006), “Historical Events and the Fragmentation of Memory in the Former East Germany” (JPMS 2007), and “Memory, Culture, and Political Change: Explaining Support for Socialism in a Post-Socialist Society” (Theory &Society 2009). In 2005-06, Straughn fielded a representative CATI survey of national identity in the United States (N=1,427) through the Survey Research Institute at Purdue University. The project has produced several papers, including “America as a Christian Nation? Understanding Religious Boundaries of National Identity in the United States” (with S. Feld, forthcoming Sociology of Religion), “Civic Patriotism and Democratic Citizenship? Unpacking the Education Effect on Political Involvement” (with A. Andriot, R&R Sociological Forum), and “Patriotism and Support for War” (under review). The findings have attracted significant media attention, leading to interviews with the Associated Press, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor (full-length article), Congressional Quarterly, Elkhart Truth (Elkhart, IN), Indianapolis Star, Journal Star of Lincoln, NE (full-length article), Purdue Exponent, and South Bend Tribune, as well as a radio interview broadcast on KTAR 620AM (Phoenix, AZ).
