Harvey Marshall received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in 1969, and joined the Purdue University faculty in 1969.

He has authored or coauthored over 35 articles in journals such as the American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Social Problems, Demography, and Population Studies. His early research interests, and virtually all of his publications, were urban sociology and demography. In later years his interests shifted to the sociology of developing nations. He put the graduate multivariate statistics course into the curriculum in the early seventies and taught this course until the late nineties. He also teaches undergraduate statistics, urban sociology, and the sociology of developing nations.
