The Psychoacoustics Laboratory, located in the basement of Heavilon Hall, is designed to study auditory perception by normal and hearing impairedlisteners. Subjects listen to signals through headphones in a double-walled sound-attenuating booth and respond on a computer keyboard. A Pentiumcomputer generates the signals and controls the experiments. Additional signalprocessing is done by programmable attenuators and switches. An oscilloscopeand a spectrum analyzer are used for signal analysis. The experimental data may be analyzed and modeled using MatLab with a Signal Processing Toolbox.The goal of the research in this lab is to understand normal auditory processing, and how it changes with hearing impairment. Current research isexamining changes in auditory processing with stimulation by sound.
