                              Summer Fun

In our "Summer Fun" program, children with language impairment between the ages of 4 and 5 come to Heavilon Hall on the Purdue campus three mornings a week for four weeks. Half of their time each day is spent doing a wide variety of research activities. These activities use computers, toys, puppets, and picture books, and the staff tries to make them as enjoyable as possible for the children. The other half of each day is spent in group and individual activities conducted by ASHA certified clinical supervisors and students from SLHS. Individual therapy focuses on specific speech and language goals, while group therapy emphasizes experiential and enrichment activities. We call it "Summer Fun" because the children really do have a great time.

Along with the research on grammatical morphology done by our lab, Dr. Lisa Goffman conducts research on speech motor development during the summer program. This program provides a valuable opportunity to study many aspects of speech and language development in the same children. It also provides free therapy, during the summer months, when services are often unavailable through the schools. Parents and clinicians in central Indiana who would like more information about Summer Fun are invited to e-mail Dr. Leonard or call (765) 496-2253.
