The mission of the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing
Sciences emphasizes the study of human communication
sciences and disorders. Programs exist in speech and
language pathology, audiology, speech and hearing science,
and linguistics. Students have the opportunity to work
with faculty in specialty areas such as clinical speech-language
pathology, diagnostic and rehabilitation audiology,
communication, speech and hearing physiology, experimental
phonetics, psychoacoustics, bioacoustics, administrative
aspects of clinical and research programs, etc. As clinicians
and behavioral scientists, students study the receptive
and productive aspects of normal and pathological communication.
The mission of the department fits well with
the missions of both the university and the College of
Liberal Arts. The department provides an undergraduate
and graduate curriculum of instruction in the professions
of speech-language pathology and audiology. The department
reflects a state, national, and international character
in its student enrollment, in its reputation, and in
the placement of its graduates. As stated, Purdue is
a major research university, and research plays a major
role in the department. The mission of the College of
Liberal Arts mentions the importance of facilitating
interaction among people in our society. Clearly, the
Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences has a primary
concern with the study of human communication, both
normal and disordered.
