About SHAN: Have you found yourself feeling uncomfortable?

Have you found yourself uncomfortable because someone made a comment or joke that you found demeaning because of your gender or sexual orientation? Have you ever felt uncomfortable because an instructor or student paid unwanted sexual attention to you or made unwanted sexual overtures?  Have you found yourself trying to help a peer who feels sexually harassed and you are not sure what you can say or do to help? If you have, there is a source of help. The College of Liberal Arts has created the Sexual Harassment Advisors' Network (SHAN) to provide advice to students, faculty, and staff who have issues or concerns related to sexual harassment. SHAN does not replace existing University procedures; it provides a supportive environment for individuals to talk confidentially about their experiences.

Initial contact is established by concerned individuals. Advisors provide a safe environment in which students, staff, and faculty feel free to discuss their concerns. Advisors are thoroughly familiar with formal reporting procedures at the University and can explain the system to complainants. If students or staff members prefer to handle the situation independently, advisors can suggest possible options.

Nine women and men serve as volunteer network advisors; most are faculty members, while others are administrative/professional or clerical staff. None are officially involved in handling sexual harassment complaints as a part of their regular Purdue employment.
