Prospective Students
Allison
Allison joins us from Monticello, Indiana and is studying Spanish Education. After graduation, she plans to teach high school Spanish and then head to graduate school to study Language Acquisition and ESL.
Like many of her Liberal Arts peers, Allison was faced with a dilemma the moment she accepted her offer of admission: what to study!? She started out as a Communication major with a Spanish minor, but soon realized that Communication just wasn’t for her. Throughout the course of her freshman year, Allison changed her major four times and declared (and un-declared) several minors, but she always loved her Spanish courses best. She finally decided to further pursue that passion, and is so excited by her studies!
In retrospect, Allison has said that experiencing the broad spectrum of Liberal Arts courses was one of the best choices she made. “I’m so grateful that I came to Purdue with an open mind about what I wanted to do. My concern has always been that by choosing just one or two areas of study, I would risk missing out on so many fascinating things. I was right: I never would have considered Spanish or teaching as career options if I hadn’t first explored my interests and strengths through other Liberal Arts courses.” Additionally, Allison has noted that, “...when you’re studying material everyday that excites you, you’re not missing out!”
In addition to her studies, Allison is very involved on campus. Her involvement on campus has included Dean’s Ambassadors, the President’s Leadership Class, WILY Radio, and PHENOMENA!, a student produced rock show. Allison is most proud of her involvement with the Purduettes, where she performs across the city, state, and country, and in the annual Purdue Christmas Show. She also tutors Spanish students and has volunteered with adult ESL classes at the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy. On getting involved, Allison says that, “…if you’re involved in activities that you sincerely enjoy, you will add such value to your Purdue education. There are experiences and lessons you can’t learn in a classroom!”
