Eric L. Clitheroe Scholarship Competition

The 2012 Clitheroe Scholarship Competition
The Department of Philosophy invites applications from undergraduate majors in philosophy for the 2012-13 Clitheroe Scholarship.  The Clitheroe Scholarships were established in September 1987 as a memorial to Eric L. Clitheroe to support undergraduate students majoring in Philosophy.  One scholarship worth $750 will be awarded for 2012-13.

Eligibility: The scholarship competition is open only to undergraduates who are majoring in philosophy.

Application Procedure: Students may apply for the scholarship by submitting hard copies of the following materials to Chris McKinney in the office of the Department of Philosophy (BRNG 7105) by 12:00 noon on Friday, February 24, 2012.

1.  A copy of a paper on any topic in philosophy, 5-15 pages in length.  Normally, this will be a paper written for a philosophy class at Purdue, representing your best philosophical work.  In exceptional circumstances (e.g., transfer students) papers written in another context will be acceptable.
2.  A copy of the student’s transcript from Purdue University.
3.  A one-page cover letter presenting one’s application to the Clitheroe selection committee. The letter should include the name of at least one Purdue philosophy professor who is familiar with the student’s work.  Additional information relevant to the receipt of the scholarship   (e.g., extracurricular activities) may also be included in the cover letter.

Evaluation Criteria:  The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the following criteria: the quality of the submitted written work, the student’s academic record and standing, and the philosophical promise of the candidate.  This is not a “paper prize,” but a scholarship for academic merit in philosophy; however, significant weight may be placed upon the submitted work as evidence of such merit.  (There is a separate "paper prize" competition with a similar name, which is held in spring in conjunction with the CLA Literary Awards.)
Decisions: Decisions for the scholarship will be announced no later than April 1, 2012.  The award will be applied to the student’s bursar account in two installments (half in fall of 2012, half in spring 2013).
