Ph.D. Course Options and Guidelines

  1. If a course option is approved for an area, then the area requirement must be satisfied with an average from all courses of B+, and no grade lower than B- will be accepted for any course in satisfaction of the requirement.
  2. If a student receives a grade of C or lower, in a course that has been approved for satisfaction of an area requirement, his or her Advisory Committee will review his or her other work and make a recommendation to the faculty as to whether he or she should be allowed to repeat the area failed or whether he or she should be asked to withdraw from the program. If it is decided that the student can repeat the area, then he or she may either be required to take additional courses or be required to take a general examination in the area.
  3. A course will be counted toward satisfaction of an area requirement only the first time it is taken, unless the content of the course has changed substantially.
  4. The Appendix to this document indicates the area requirements normally satisfied by each of the courses offered by the department. In some cases, a course may be used to satisfy a requirement other than the one(s) indicated; in such cases, (a) the proposal must be approved by the student's Advisory Committee, which may, in questionable instances, wish to consult with the Graduate Committee before giving approval, and (b) the student should consult with the instructor in charge of the course before the beginning of the semester; the instructor, at his or her discretion, may tailor course requirements to better match the student's work with the area requirement being fulfilled.
  5. Normally, at most one 590 (directed reading course) will be counted towards the fulfillment of area requirements (one total, not one per area).  Exceptions may be made if a course needed to fulfill a requirement is not available.
  6. It is expected that students will have taken PHIL 450, 550, or 650 by the end of their second year, unless they plan to satisfy the Logic, Language, and Science requirement by examination.
