I have been reading Stephen King's _On Writing_ in order to give myself more motivation to write (yes, that is what I tell myself). Instead of finding successful writing tips I find myself wanting to deconstruct this piece for a seperate project. King dives headfirst into the elitist, hegemonic soup of the academy. He takes the do as I say not as I do approach. He worships Strunk and White's Style Manual as some sort of holy book, but breaks all of these rules in his own work. He criticizes those who use adverbs or overly long sentences, but any reader of King knows that his own pentient for adverbs and long obscure sentences usually makes the first 100-200 pages of any of his books a chore to read! (No, I am not admitting that King is a guilty pleasure for me).

I am fascinated by how much King sounds like some of the "ancients" in the English department, "There is one way to write, if you want to write well and I am here to tell you how to do that. Forget any originality or cultural nuances, just do as I say and all will be right with the world!".
