Specialization: English as a Second Language Writing


Tony Silva directs the ESL Graduate Program and the ESL Writing Program in the Department of English at Purdue University, where he teaches graduate courses for Ph.D., M.A., and Certificate students and writing support courses for graduate and undergraduate international students. With Ilona Leki he founded and co-edited the Journal of Second Language Writing (Elsevier) from 1992-2007; he continues to assemble the Journal’s annotated bibliography and coordinate the translation of JSLW article abstracts (into Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish) on the Journal’s website (http://www.jslw.org).  With Paul Kei Matsuda he founded and hosts the (now annual and international) Symposium on Second Language Writing (http://sslw.asu.edu/) and edited On Second Language Writing (Erlbaum, 2001), Landmark Essays on ESL Writing (Erlbaum, 2001), and Second Language Writing Research: Perspectives on the Process of Knowledge Construction (Erlbaum, 2005); another volume, Practicing Theory in Second Language Writing (Parlor Press) is forthcoming. With Ilona Leki and Alister Cumming, he co-authored A Synthesis of Research on Second Language Writing (Routledge, 2008). He has published articles in a number of journals, including, TESOL Quarterly, College Composition and Communication, Modern Language Journal, ELT Journal, Written Communication, Composition Studies, TESL Canada Journal, and Writing Program Administration. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Basic Writing, Journal of Writing Assessment, TESL Canada Journal, and Writing Program Administration. He is an active member of TESOL where he has organized the Graduate Student Forum, served as a member of the Search Committee for the Editor of TESOL Quarterly and as a member of the Steering Committee of the Second Language Writing Interest Section; he has also served as CCCC as a member of the Executive Board, the Committee on Second Language Writing, and the Special Interest Group on Second Language Writing.
