Network Systems
The systems used in Liberal Arts are diverse. Our network systems consist of a centralized college network -- various servers and applications which provide file services, print serving, mail and post office, group calendaring, web services, software metering, and backup of central servers. Departmental networks, in some areas, provide similar services to a particular department.
The network environments maintained by CLA IT include the following:
* Windows 2003: In a Microsoft Active Directory-based environment, our network servers provide file, print, and database services to the administrative areas and most academic departments and computer labs. We use Microsoft Exchange 2003 to provide centralized e-mail and on-line calendar services to faculty and staff. Microsoft Internet Information Server 6 is used for our web services. Microsoft SQL Server provides a database back-end.
* Mac OS X Server seamlessly integrates some Mac OS X-based workstations into our network environment.
* Linux provides other resources used in the administration and support of college systems.
* KeyServer: Our Sassafras KeyServer concurrent software license metering software provides service to both the Mac and Windows platforms.
Faculty, Staff, and Student Workstations
Desktop and/or notebook workstations at each faculty and staff member's desk, plus those in the college's instructional and graduate labs, use the Windows XP or Mac OS X operating systems.
Instructional Technology Resources
The College of Liberal Arts maintains a selection of special equipment for use in classrooms and/or for presentations. Liberal Arts faculty and staff may reserve this equipment on a first-come-first-served basis. (Students may reserve gear at ITaP's Digital Learning Collaboratory.)
How to reserve equipment: Please request reservations via e-mail to reserveit@cla.purdue.edu. In your message, include the following information:
* Your name, department, and phone number
* Which equipment you wish to borrow
* The date and time you would like to pick it up
* The date and time you will return it
* The location at which the equipment will be used, such as "BRNG 1243", "Chicago", or "Northern Indiana recruiting trip"
Reservations will be granted on a first-come-first-served basis and will be confirmed by e-mail.
Most of these resources must be picked up from and returned to BRNG room 1290 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
In the absence of special arrangements, equipment needed for events that end after 5 p.m. must be locked securely in a faculty or staff office and returned shortly after 8 a.m. the next working day. Equipment needed for early-morning events may be picked up before 5 p.m. the previous working day, if available, and must also be locked securely overnight.
Setup assistance may not be available; please reserve gear for a practice session in advance of your event if you're not familiar with its use.
Additional equipment may be available in your department and at ITaP's Digital Learning Collaboratory. Contact your department's IT staff for more information.
Available equipment:
* Notebook computers: We have a dozen multimedia-capable Windows-based notebook computers. Wireless and traditional (wired) network cards are available for use with these notebooks.
* Projector: A portable video projector allows you to display computer presentations in classrooms and meeting rooms that don’t have permanent projectors. The Sharp XG-NV5XB projector has XGA (1024 x 768 pixel) resolution, multiple inputs, and digital image adjustment. This 10-pound unit has a brightness rating of 1000 ANSI lumens.
* Digital camera: The Nikon CoolPix 990 is a 3.34 megapixel high-capacity camera with accessories to transfer digital photographs quickly and directly to a Windows- or Mac OS-based computer. This digital camera has a maximum true image resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels for easy cropping and good print quality, a 3x optical zoom lens, and several exposure and focus modes (including fully automatic) for great versatility. Review your photographs immediately on the built-in LCD screen. The CoolPix 990 accepts our removable, reusable 16- and 48-MB CompactFlash cards which store as many as 973 images, depending on size and quality. Or use your own CompactFlash cards.
