Classical Studies

Classical StudiesA classic is the best of its kind.  A classic is able to withstand the test of time. Historically, the
academic discipline of Classical Studies has been the place where students and scholars gather
to study the languages of ancient Greece and Rome (Classical Greek and Latin), classical Greek and Roman philosophy, art, archaeology, and mythology.  Classical Studies includes some of the best in literary genres, such as the first European epics, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.  Withstanding the test of time, Homer’s epics have come to influence literary works such as James Joyce’s Ulysses and  Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon.  Homer is only one of the many gems found in the area of Classical Studies.

Classics at PurdueClassical Studies

As a land-grant institution, Purdue University was established as the place in Indiana for the study of engineering, agronomy, technology and the sciences.  The wisdom behind the land-grant mission was to include Classical Studies as a necessary component not only in the technical training of students, but also in cultivating well-informed citizens who think critically and have a global understanding.  Some students pursue graduate degrees in the humanities after finishing their undergraduate degrees at Purdue.  Students who study the Classics also will major in engineering, computer science, and other fields as well.

Classics’ Strategic SignificanceClassical Studies

Since the late-1980s, Purdue has continued to increase its offerings in Classical Studies, which now include majors and minors in Classical Studies, and major and minor concentrations in languages, literature, theory, art and archeology.  Classical Studies at Purdue is truly interdisciplinary, drawing experts from several different departments.  This richness provides the Classics major with an eclectic mix of training in philosophy, history, linguistics, literature, and archaeology. This  interdisciplinary base is the strength of the undergraduate program in Classical Studies at Purdue University.
