Graduate Programs
Three graduate degree options are available to Health and Kinesiology
students, Master of Science (M.S.), Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D.) and our New Master of Public Health (MPH). There are also three Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs.

Master of Science (M.S.)
The Master of Science can be either a thesis (24 semester hours
of coursework) or nonthesis program (33 semester hours of coursework).
At the Masters Degree level, Health and Kinesiology is organized
around four general areas of study. They are:
- Movement and Sport Science —
Includes biomechanics, exercise physiology, history/philosophy
of sport, motor control, motor development, and sport psychology.

- Health Promotion — Includes
public health, health behavior, special populations, health policy,
and health risk management. See degree

- Pedagogy and Administration
— Includes teacher education, health education, management
and marketing, and educational philosophy. See degree

- Health and Fitness — Includes
corporate/worksite health, wellness, and fitness; hospital/medical-based
health promotion, exercise and fitness, cardiac/occupational rehabilitation
programs; commercial/private health and fitness clubs; and other

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The Doctor of Philosophy is a research-oriented program of study
including a dissertation. A minimum of three years beyond the M.S.
degree is necessary for completion of the doctoral program.specialize
in the following areas of advanced study:
- Physiology of Exercise, Human Movement,
and Sport — Includes exercise and aging, exercise
and the immune system, the overtraining syndrome, sports nutrition,
performance enhancement, and the influence of exercise on various
components of daily energy expenditure. See degree

- Psychology of Sport and Exercise, and
Motor Behavior — Includes social and motivational
processes in sport and exercise, coordination of bimanual performance,
motor timing processes, infant perceptual-motor development of
reaching and locomotion, and eating disorders among athletes.

- Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
— Includes investigations of risk-reducing behavioral
methodologies in children and the elderly, health policy development,
workplace interventions, and patient education. See degree

- Pedagogy of Physical Activity and Health
— The primary focus of this program is on physical activity
and health issues in traditional and non-traditional pedagogical

Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs
- Interdepartmental Nutrition Program
(Ph.D.) — Includes biochemical and molecular; human and
clinical; animal health, growth, and development; and public health

in Gerontology (minor compatible with any master or doctoral
degree program) — Understanding the process of growing older
