Graduate Programs Application Information

Applications must include all official transcripts, GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, a goal statement, a completed form and a $55 application fee. Forms for requesting transcripts, letters of recommendation, and information about the goal statement are available on the Graduate School application site. In addition, international applicants must submit a TOEFL score. All transcripts must be in both the native language and a certified English translation.

A Master's degree applicant must have a 3.0 GPA to satisfy the Graduate School's minimum requirement. A GPA less than 3.0 will require conditional admission. Doctoral applicants are required by the department to have a 3.25 GPA. The Graduate Record Examination score guidelines set for applicants are a total of 1000 on the Verbal and Quantitative scores for Master's degree applications and 1100 for doctoral applications. The TOEFL score requirement for both the M.S. and the Ph.D. programs are 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based) or 77 (internet based). An IELTS score of 6.5 or higher is also acceptable. TOEFL and IELTS scores must not be more than 24 months old at the time applications are submitted. In order to be considered for teaching assistantships, international students must have a TSE score of at least 50.

The ETS codes for GRE and TOEFL exams are as follow:

  • Institution Code 1631 for both exams.
  • Department code for GRE is 3909
  • Department code for TOEFL is 91

The graduate faculty meet in early February to review all complete applications for the next fall semester. This is when the bulk of graduate admissions (and funding decisions) are made. Therefore, students applying for full-time study are strongly encouraged to have their application complete no later than February 1. With rare exception, applications for full-time graduate study are not considered after April 30.
