Community Engagement

Through its programs of knowledge exchange and application, the department helps put knowledge to work by creating special service opportunities that assist members of the local community and beyond to lead healthy and active lifestyles.

Three important departmental engagement activities are:

  • The National Youth Sports Program – This program serves 200 children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 16 in a five-week, summer activity and health program on the Purdue campus. Led by HK faculty and students, the program has been recognized as one of the best in the United States.

  • The Coalition for Living Well after 50 – This coalition brings together faculty from Health and Kinesiology with various senior agencies in Tippecanoe County in the promotion of active lifestyles through physical activity. The activities of this initiative are grounded in the National Blueprint on Physical Activity and Aging.

  • The A.H. Ismail Fitness and Nutrition Center – This center engages in state-of-the art fitness programming and nutrition counseling for individuals and groups within the university and throughout Tippecanoe County and beyond.
