Coalition
for Living Well
After 50
Vision: To facilitate a community environment in which all people
50 and older may enjoy health and quality of life.
The Coalition for Living Well After 50 is an outgrowth of the National
Blueprint for Increasing Physical Activity Among Adults Age 50 and
Older. The blueprint provides a framework for planning, collaborative
action, and social change among organizations and agencies interested
in improved aging through regular physical activity. Preparing aging
Americans for the future by encouraging regular physical activity
today will bring health benefits such as extended years independence,
reduced disability, and improved quality of life.
The Coalition’s mission is to identify and bring together
community resources to define, create, promote and sustain activities,
programs and environments that support lifelong activity and health
behaviors among people 50 years and older. The steering committee
consists of representatives from Purdue University (Departments
of Health and Kinesiology, Foods and Nutrition, Nursing and the
Gerontology Program), the Area IV Agency on Aging and Community
Action Programs, Tippecanoe County Council on Aging, Lafayette/West
Lafayette Parks and Recreation, Vision 2020, Tippecanoe County Health
Department, the Governor’s Office on Physical Fitness and
Sport, Indiana State Department of Health, and the Indiana Public
Health Association. To date almost 50 community partners have affirmed
their support for the vision and mission of the Coalition.
As a result of The ACE Initiative, funded by the National Blueprint
Partners Project, the Coalition is in the process of creating marketing
materials, a website, public service announcements and a resource
manual of physical activity opportunities in the community. Community
forums are underway to solicit participation in the Coalition by
underrepresented groups and to educate consumers about the vision
and mission of the Coalition.
Funding from the State Department of Health supported a recently
completed assessment of the current status of physical activity
among community members over 50 years of age. Analysis is in progress
to reveal information that will lead to creation of a local blueprint
for matching existing services and providers with consumer needs
and for the development of new programs to fill gaps that exist.
Planning is in progress for a Coalition led conference (fall, 2004)
that will target a cross-section of representatives such as public
health workers, city planners, senior center directors, researchers,
public policy experts, transportation specialists, health and physical
activity professionals, etc. from communities across Indiana. The
goal is to demonstrate how collaborative partnerships can lead to
innovative approaches to increasing physical activity for all citizens
of Indiana.
