Health and Kinesiology Internships

Three undergraduate majors, Health Promotion Major, Health Promotion Concentration, and the Health and Fitness Major, require students to complete both HK 269, Practicum Introduction and Preparation, and HK 392, Cooperative Work Experience IV. HK 269 helps students obtain an internship, and HK 392 is the fulfillment of that internship. Five hundred on-site hours are required to complete an internship. Students must complete the following steps:

1.

Identification and Selection of an Approved Practicum-Internship Site.

The Purdue HK Career Development Services office has identified over 400 internship sites nationwide. For the most recent computer listing, see Purdue HK Internship Listing. These listings are supported by additional information in notebooks and files available in Student Career Development Office in 110 Lambert. In addition, students may search out and identify other sites for consideration. In any case, site documentation required for approval must be provided that indicates the site description, on-site supervisor, and the internship agreement form. For more details, visit the Career Development Office.

2.

On-site Practicum/Internship Job Description.

(responsibility of student)

This is the most important internship document for the student and it is the student's responsibility to provide one for internship approval. It should be as detailed as possible and include:

  • specific tasks, activities or responsibilities the student will perform;
  • the relevance of the experience to the student's personal and professional career objectives;
  • a time-line indicating the total number of hours (500 on-site hours are required) and what kinds of activities will take place and at what time;
  • what evaluation strategies and forms will be used.

3.

Liability Insurance.

(responsibility of student)

After a student has accepted an internship position, the student must apply for and pay fees to obtain Purdue University internship liability insurance. This can be done through the HK Business Office located in Lambert 101.

4.

Signed Agreement Forms

(responsibility of the student, the on-site supervisor, and the Purdue HK internship supervisor)

After preparing and submitting copies of the Practicum/Internship Job Description and liability insurance, the student and on-site internship supervisor sign and submit an appropriate agreement form to the HK internship supervisor.

5.

Course Registration.

Once students have completed all the arrangements for an internship as described above, they may register for HPER 392 Cooperative/Professional Work Experiences with their academic advisor. HPER 392 is a 0-credit course which is required for all HK Health Promotion and HK Health and Fitness majors. It requires 500 on-site hours to complete an internship.

All necessary forms for selecting, getting an internship approved, and for student responsibilities and requirements during the internship are provided below (PDF files):

Copies of all forms are also available in the Student Career Development Office (Lambert 110).
