The School of Languages and Cultures (formerly the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures) offers basic courses in all of the languages you see on the left. Classics includes both Latin and Ancient Greek. For Hebrew, students may choose either Biblical or Modern Hebrew. In Chinese and Spanish, the department offers some special courses for heritage speakers.

Undergraduate majors are currently available in Classics, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. These programs also offer minors. Additionally, the department has minors in Arabic, Chinese and Portuguese. Minors and "double majors" in a foreign language are especially popular with undergraduates at Purdue.

The School of Languages and Cultures offers Doctoral programs in French, German, and Spanish literature and linguistics, as well as Second Language Acquisition. Faculty members in the School of Languages and Cultures enjoy a reputation for excellence in research. The department sponsors a monograph series in romance literatures, and is the source of three scholarly journals. For more information, see the Publications page.
