Graduate students can receive college-level
teaching experience while pursuing their degree. Because of the
favorable faculty-student ratio, graduate classes and seminars are
small. Experienced faculty members provide individual guidance of
your program.
The department offers teaching
assistantships to virtually all students who meet its admission
requirements. For example, in 2007-2008, graduate teaching
assistants will receive a minimum of $12,310 per academic year, plus the
remission of most tuition and fees in return for half-time teaching
or other staff duties in the department. There are also several
scholarships and fellowships available within the department and
University.
The tuition and fees for
Indiana
residents for the 2007-2008 academic year
are $7,154.Out-of-state students pay $21,962 per academic
year. However, graduate teaching assistants do not pay tuition
charges, and graduate student fees are only $1,486 this year.
The cost of living in
West Lafayette
is fairly low – students should expect to pay approximately $10,270 for housing, food,
books and supplies, and personal
expenses. This figure does not include tuition and fees at Purdue. University housing is available for both single and
married students and there are numerous apartments close to campus.
Applications are accepted
throughout the year. The GRE is required for all
US
citizens and permanent residents. The TOEFL is required for all
international applicants whose native language is not English. All
degree-seeking international students must have a minimum score of
550 on the written test for admission, or 213 on the computer-based
test or 77 on the internet based test with a minimum score in these areas: Writing 18, Speaking 18, Listening 14 and Reading 19. Applicants who wish to apply for fellowships must generally
submit their credentials by mid-January for admission in the
Fall semester. Consideration for
assistantships is usually given to applicants who apply by April 1st.
