Japanese Major and Minor


Japanese Major (35 Hours)

Before undertaking this major, the student must establish proficiency equivalent to Japanese Level IV. Proficiency may be established by taking and passing JPNS 202, by examination, or by other evidence acceptable to the Department.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR:

A. The following courses in Japanese language (11 Cr. Hrs.)

3___ 301 Japanese Level V
3___ 302 Japanese Level VI
3___ 401 Japanese Level VII
2___ 402 Japanese Level VIII

B. The following courses in Japanese literature (9 Cr. Hrs.)

3___ 241 Introduction to the Study of Japanese Literature
3___ 341 Japanese Literature I
3___ 342 Japanese Literature II

C. The following courses in Japanese Linguistics (6 Cr. Hrs.)

(Note: FLL 261 is a prerequisite)
3___ 361/561 Structure I/Phonology and Morphology
3___ 362/562 Structure II/Syntax and Semantics

D. Japanese electives (9 Cr. Hrs.)

Nine hours chosen by the student from courses in Japanese at or above the 300 level; no more than six credits may be courses taught in English.

Japanese Minor (15 Hours)

Before undertaking this minor, the student must establish proficiency equivalent to Japanese Level IV. Proficiency may be established by taking and passing JPNS 202, by examiniation, or by other evidence acceptable to the Department.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR:

A. The following courses in Japanese language (6 Cr. Hrs.)

3____ 301 Japanese Level V
3____ 302 Japanese Level VI

B. The following course in Japanese literature (3 Cr. Hrs.)

3____ 241 Introduction to the Study of Japanese Literature

C. Japanese electives: (6 Cr. Hrs.)

Six hours chosen by the student from Japanese courses at the 300- or 400-level, except courses numbered 330 - 339 or 430 - 439.
