French 201 and 202 are intermediary courses designed to help students learn to carry out a variety of high-frequency, communicative tasks (or functions). The goal of these courses is to develop language proficiency in French. The courses are conducted in French and will help students progress toward competence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as toward knowledge of French and Francophone cultures. The courses focus on active language use: students interact meaningfully with classmates and develop communicative strategies. Functions range from the most basic communicative tasks - such as greeting someone, performing introductions, describing physical appearance, identifying and pointing out people, describing character and temperament - to more complex functions like telling a story, starting and supporting an opinion, and hypothesizing.
