Continued work on Mandarin Chinese (prerequisite: CHNS level I or equivalent).


CHNS 107 Elementary Chinese for Heritage Students              TBA
(4 credits; five hrs/wk M-F 9:30)
A first Chinese language course designed for students who have acquired some oral Mandarin Chinese from home or other sources.

 
CHNS 201--Chinese Level III         Alice Wang

Continued work on Mandarin Chinese (prerequisite: CHNS level II or equivalent).

CHNS 305 Introduction to Classical Chinese               Daniel Hsieh
(3 credits; three hrs/wk TTh 4:30-5:45)
Introduction to the grammar of Classical Chinese.  Readings will include selections from pre-Qin texts as well as later classical prose and verse (prerequisite: CHNS level VI or equivalent).


CHNS 313 Advanced Chinese Reading and Writing                   Alice Wang
(3 credits; three hrs/week; MWF 11:30)
Intended for students whose command of the language is a least equivalent to that attained in satisfactory completion of Chinese 302.  Reading materials will be selected from modern social and cultural studies, including a variety of literary texts.  Instructor’s consent required.


CHNS 401—Chinese Level VII        TBA
(3 credits; three hrs/week; MWF 12:30)
Continued work on Mandarin Chinese (prerequisite: CHNS level VI or equivalent).


CHNS 241/H Introduction to the Study of Chinese Literature Wann, Ai-jen
(3 credits; three hours/wk  TTh 12-1:15 )
An introductory class on the reading and discussing of Chinese literary texts, with emphasis on modern fiction with additional focus on poetry and essays. 

            
CHNS 285--Chinese Calligraphy         Wann, Ai-jen  Not offered this semester
(1 credit;  M 4:30-6:20)
An introduction to the graceful art of writing Chinese characters. This course is intended to be the introduction to a two part sequence (the Spring semester will be more advanced). NO PRIOR EXPOSURE TO THE CHINESE LANGUAGE WRITING SYSTEM IS ASSUMED.


CHNS  594W  Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢)                  Daniel Hsieh
(3 credits; three hours/wk TTh  1:30-2:45)
Close reading of the great Chinese novel, Honglou meng 紅樓夢. All primary sources will be read in Chinese.
