Michelle Carreon
Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Michelle is a graduate student in American Studies at Purdue focusing on Sociology (Social Movements) and Film Studies. She is currently working as Professor Lawton's Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant. She is also the editor of the Film Video Studies Newsletter.
A graduate of the Purdue Film/Video Studies Program, she is currently expanding her research and creative interests within the scope of cinema studies while examining the extent the medium can be and has been used in social activist movements. In April of 2007, Michelle presented a paper at the First Annual Undergraduate Midwest Film Studies Conference at the University of Notre Dame entitled, "This Lens between Us: An Analysis of Underground (1976), The Weather Underground (2002), and Film as Social Activism." She co-directed and starred as the giant, dancing apple in "How to Eat an Apple" and also co-directed a short documentary entitled "Local Chiguiros," which focused on artists in the Lafayette music/visual art scene. A recipient of the 2006 CLA Outstanding Seniors Award, Michelle also is the African American Studies Program Essay Winner, 2005 and the Edward Simon B'Nai B'rith Barzillai Lodge No. 111 Prize in Jewish Studies Winner, 2005 and she presented a paper entitled, "Jewishness Within the Realm of American Independent Film: An Analysis of Identity and Film as Activism" at the Noon Series Lecture in September of 2005.
