CLA Promotion and Tenure Policies and Procedures
There are several documents that provide important information regarding promotion and tenure policies and procedures for faculty in the College of Liberal Arts. These include department promotion standards, the University Promotions Policy, and the College of Liberal Arts Promotion and Tenure Procedures.
In August of 2008, departments in the college reviewed their standards for promotion and made updates as needed. Click HERE to view guidelines for CLA departments.
A second document of major importance is the University Promotions Policy which identifies criteria for promotion to the various ranks and general procedures to be followed by all colleges and schools in considering candidates for promotion. As part of the nomination process, faculty prepare a dossier, including a Form 36, for review by the three committees. Click here for instructions for preparing a nominee’s promotion document.
The third document of importance to CLA faculty is the College of Liberal Arts Promotion and Tenure Procedures. This document provides more specific information on the step-by-step procedures in the college for considering candidates for promotion and tenure. It honors the spirit of the University policy, but includes some procedures that are unique to our college.
A table showing the outcome of CLA tenure track faculty promotions during the last five years is available here. Please note that the “Nominated” column includes all faculty members nominated for promotion beginning at the department level and continuing through the Area Committee and to the University Promotions Committee. A second table indicates the average number of years in rank for associate professors promoted to full professor in the last five years. The data is presented by rank and gender.
