Coursework

According to Graduate School requirements, coursework for the Ph.D. consists of a minimum of 30 credits (10 courses). In order to fulfill TCS requirements, six courses will be taken in three different areas:

critical theory (569, 632, 668)
cultural theory (576, 580, 626)
feminist theory and literature (597, 672)
queer studies*
minority literature*
postcolonial studies (592, 673)
visual culture (586)
rhetorical history and theory (624, 626, 680C)
cultural analysis and the study of literature (543, 554, 557, 667)
linguisitics and semiotics (511, 570; 596 and 627 when appropriate)

*NOTE: The above course listings are provisional, and include only courses listed in the Graduate School catalogue. Many variable-title courses are offered that will satisfy TCS requirements. As new courses are officially approved, they will be added to the list. Although a course can be designated under more than one area, it can count only once on a student's plan of study. In addition to the six TCS courses, students will take a four-course secondary area, following departmental guidelines.
