Second Language Studies/ESL
Master's Program
Special emphases of the program are second language writing, language assessment, World Englishes, and applied linguistics studies. Each represents faculty members' particular areas of expertise.
Length of Program: 4-5 semesters.
Program Requirements: 30 hours of coursework and either a thesis or a comprehensive examination are required.

Courses Offered: (*required): *Introduction to English Linguistics; *two of the following: ESL Theory, Curriculum Design, Quantitative Research; Qualitative Research; *two of the following: History of the English Language, Phonology, Syntax, Semantics; *one of the following: Seminar in Language Testing, Seminar in Second Language Writing, Seminar in World Englishes, Variable Title Seminar in ESL; Seminar in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics; *four electives, one outside the ESL program.
Admission Requirements: Admission ordinarily requires a bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing with a GPA of 3.0 or other academic indices of outstanding performance. The program requires GRE scores. Nonnative English speakers must also provide TOEFL iBT scores.
