Mission Statement

The College of Liberal Arts Diversity Action Committee will improve the climate for diversity in the college by advising the Dean on diversity issues, proposing strategies for creating more diversity, supporting diversity efforts in departments and units, and cooperating with University offices and corresponding committees in other schools and colleges.

CLA Student Organization Diversity Program Grant

The CLA Diversity Action Committee is the sponsor of this exciting opportunity for our students to promote multicultural awareness and diversity on campus. All undergraduate student organizations in the college are eligible to apply for a $250 grant to fund an activity or program to improve the campus climate for diversity. A CLA student organization is defined as an organization in which 50% (or more) of its undergraduate members are enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts.

The Purdue Anthropology Society used their grant to fund "Global Cultural Awareness Day." The Student English Association used their grant to fund a reading by Vietnamese American poet Bao Phi.

Recent Activities

During the 2010-11 academic year, the Diversity Action Committee participated in searches for the Director of Student Diversity Initiatives, Director of Student Recruitment, and the Head of the Department of English. We also met with four consultants who gave campus presentations in preparation for the inauguration of a college Center for Research in Diversity and Inclusion. We had two meetings with Dean Weiser to discuss the implementation of recommendations proposed by the 2009-10 Diversity Action Committee. During the spring semester, we planned a forum focusing on issues and concerns to students from underrepresented groups. However, we decided to postpone the forum until we had a broader range of student concerns to discuss. For additional information on diversity in the College of Liberal Arts, see the following resources:
