Subscribing to the KB List

Send a message to majordomo@purdue.edu. Leave the subject line blank. In your message, write only

subscribe kb

Sending Messages to the KB List

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to kb@purdue.edu. This is called "sending mail to the list" because you send mail to a single address and MajorDomo makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address (kb@purdue.edu) is also called the "list address." You must never try to send any subscription command to that address because it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed.

Posting Messages to the List

The list address is kb@purdue.edu, so if you want to post a message, enter that in the To: field. In order to post a message to the list, you have to be subscribed under the address from which you send your message.

Managing Your Subscription

To check your subscription settings, unsubscribe, or re-subscribe, you can visit the MajorCool interface on the WWW at the following address:

http://directory.purdue.edu/directory-bin/majorcool

Or you can unsubscribe from the list by posting a message to majordomo@purdue.edu, leaving the subject line blank, then typing the message

unsubscribe kb

If you want to join the list, the procedure is the same, but the message should read

subscribe kb

Receiving KB Messages in Digest Form

The majordomo listserv software allows subscribers to receive all messages posted in any given day as a "digest" (i.e., in one message). At present, everyone originally on Burke-L will receive every message as it is posted. If you would like to receive messages in digest form, here's the scoop: A Majordomo digest is actually a separate mailing list. Thus, the digest of kb is called kb-digest. People subscribe independently to kb and kb-digest. Very likely no one would want to be on both lists. To change between kb and kb-digest, a subscriber needs to unsubscribe from one list and subscribe to the other. This can be done with one message to majordomo@purdue.edu with two command lines in it, e.g.:

unsubscribe kb

subscribe kb-digest

Archiving

The KB list is archived. You can retrieve previously posted messages by sending e-mail to majordomo@purdue.edu and using the majordomo "index" and "get" commands. The "index" command will return a list of all archive files available. The "get" command will retrieve a specific file. For example, this command, mailed to majordomo@purdue.edu, will retrieve a list of all archived files for the kb@purdue.edu mailing list:

index kb

Likewise, this command will retrieve the file v01.n001 from the archive of the kb@purdue.edu mailing list:

get kb v01.n001

Posts made to the mailing list are archived under the "normal" and "-digest" names of the mailing list. So in the above examples, you can use either kb or kb-digest for the "index" and "get" commands.
