SPAN 54000 : Spanish Literature of the Middle Ages; Prerequisite: SPAN 341 and SPAN 342. A survey of Spanish literature from the eleventh through the fifteenth centuries. Reading and discussion of a number of representative works as well as excerpts from several others. An introduction to the methods of approach to medieval literature.
SPAN 54100 : Spanish Literature of the Golden Age; Prerequisite: SPAN 341 and SPAN 342. A survey of Spanish literature from 1500 to 1681. Reading and discussion of representative prose, dramatic, and poetic works. Lectures and supplemental readings on literary criticism and on various aspects of the period useful to an understanding of the literature it produced.
SPAN 54200 : Cervantes' Don Quijote; Prerequisite: SPAN 341 and SPAN 342. Reading and discussion of Don Quijote in the context of Spanish Renaissance literature and subsequent developments in the genre of the novel.
SPAN 54300 : Spanish Literature of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries; Prerequisite: SPAN 341 and SPAN 342. The development of Spanish peninsular literature from Neoclassicism to Realism. Reading, analysis, and discussion of a representative selection of works of the periods.

SPAN 54900 : Hispanic Women Writers; Prerequisite: SPAN 341 and SPAN 342. A survey of the literature of Hispanic women in light of their traditions and of feminist literary theory and criticism.

SPAN 55400 : Survey of Hispanic Caribbean Literature; This writing and reading intensive course is a survey of Hispanic Caribbean literature from the 19th and 20th centuries. All coursework and discussions are in Spanish.
SPAN 55500 : Chicano and Puerto Rican Writers; Prerequisite: SPAN 341 and SPAN 342. A survey of the literature of Chicano and Puerto Rican writers written in Spanish and produced in the United States in light of their tradition and of contemporary interdisciplinary theories.
