COM 114
Course Description
A study of communication theories as applied to speech; practical communicative experiences ranging from interpersonal communication and small group process through problem identification and solution in discussion to informative and persuasive speaking in standard speaker-audience situations.
DROP/ADD/SECTION CHANGES
First week of classes
Students wishing to drop, add, or change sections need to follow the procedures by their school.
Second week of classes
Students wishing to drop, add, or change sections for 2008 should come to the Department of Communication, BRNG 2114. Numbered cards to hold your place in line will be available beginning at 8:00am each morning of drop, add, and section changes. If you cannot pick up your card number personally, you may send a surrogate. You (not your surrogate) should then return to BRNG 2292 with your line number card, current schedule, and Purdue ID on one of the following days:

Examination for Credit (test-out procedures)
The COM 114 test-out is one way of satisfying the COM 114 requirement. Students most likely to succeed are those with a thorough knowledge of communication theory and extensive public speaking experience. Any student may attempt the test-out.
IMPORTANT CHANGE: Students wishing to pass the written exam should read the text, "Presentational Speaking Theory & Practice" 5th Edition. Copies are available in campus bookstores. Multiple copies will be available for reading at the reserved reading desk at the Undergraduate Library. Copies may also be available from current or former COM 114 students.
Further criteria include:
1. The student must be officially enrolled in the university.
2. The student cannot be enrolled in COM 114 and attempt the test-out at the same time.
3. The student may not take the test-out if the student has already attended a COM 114 class..
4. The student may not attempt to establish credit more than one time.
The student must obtain Form 231 from his/her counselor and bring it with them to the written portion of the test.The examination is in two parts: a written test and an oral test. Students will be informed of their score on the written test via email. Only those who pass the written test (70% or better) may proceed to the oral test. Both tests must be passed to establish credit. Students may attempt the test-out only one time.
