Research and Teaching

Jeong-Nam Kim’s research areas are public opinion, public diplomacy, the strategic management of public relations, and the role of communication and cognition in human problem solving.
Kim and James E. Grunig of the University of Maryland developed a Situational Theory of Problem Solving (STOPS), a generalized version of the situational theory of publics.

Currently, Kim is conducting research studies using the new situational theory to better understand the segmentation and typology of publics in the areas of public relations and risk and health communication. Jeong-Nam also studies the effect of social activism on the practice of global public relations. Jeong-Nam and Krishnamurthy Sriramesh of Nanyang Technological University are now preparing a new chapter on social activism for The Global Public Relations Handbook.

Kim is currently collaborating with the Strategic Public Relations Center at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Journalism. The project investigates the role of research and public relations empowerment using the annual Generally Accepted Practices (GAP) study.

Jeong-Nam teaches graduate and undergraduate public relations courses such as seminar of Publics in Public Relations (graduate) and Problems in Public Relations (undergraduate).
