Brant Burleson, Professor, is one of only two recipients across the university of this year's Provost's Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor Award. The winners needed to demonstrate sustained and significant contributions to graduate education at Purdue University through activities such as relationships with students, innovative graduate teaching and administration of graduate programs. |
Charles Stewart, Professor, published the 12th edition of "Interviewing: Principles and Practices" with Bill Cash (McGraw-Hill).
McGraw-Hill also published a Korean language edition of the book.

Samuel McCormick, Assistant Professor, had his dissertation, "The Artistry of Obedience: A Critical History of Minor Political Works by Major Western Thinkers" chosen as one of two finalists for the 2007 American Society of the History of Rhetoric Dissertation Award. Also, his article, "Earning One's Inheritance: Rhetorical Criticism, Everyday Talk, and the Analysis of Public Discourse," which originally appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Speech, will be republished in an edited volume "Agency in the Margins: The Story of Outsider Rhetoric."
Robin Jensen, Assistant Professor, got a PRF research incentive grant ($1,000) and had three publications, two articles and a review essay, in Science Communication, Quarterly Journal of Speech, and AIDS Patient Care & STDs.
Steve Wilson, Professor, was first author on "Mothers' trait verbal aggressiveness as a predictor of maternal and child behavior during play-time interactions" in Human Communication Research and "Do physically abusive, neglectful, and non-maltreating parents display different levels of aversiveness, positivity, and involvement when interacting with their children? A meta-analysis of observational studies" in Child Abuse & Neglect. Also, Wilson and graduate students Elizabeth Munz, Suzy D’Enbeau, and Kristi Wilkum gave a presentation in February to an audience of about 100 at the Lafayette Rotary Club about their “CAPE Care Evaluation study,” which is following families participating in a new local intergenerational learning program.
Glenn Sparks, Professor, co-authored with Tamiru Legesse, a student from Addis Ababa University, a paper titled "The Relationship Between Mass Media Exposure and Attitudes About Family Planning in Two Sub-Cities of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia." The paper was a Top 3 paper in the Open Paper competition of the 2008 Broadcast Education Association.

Mohan Dutta, Associate Professor, spent the spring semester on sabbatical in Singapore. He also published the book "Communicating health: A culture-centered approach." Another book, "Emerging perspectives in health communication: Meaning, culture, and power," is due out from Routledge later this year. Dutta also edited the special issue of Health Marketing Quarterly and authored or co-authored articles in Communication Theory, Qualitative Health Research, and Health Communication, including the lead article "Health information processing from television: The role of health orientation." |
Patrice Buzzanell, Professor, has been elected President of the Council of Communication Associations. She also was named the department's third W. Charles and Ann Redding Fellow. This fellowship is based on productivity in research, teaching/mentoring, and engagement over the last five years. She also received a top paper award in the Organizational and Professional Communication Division at the 2008 Central States Communication Association conference and was a scholar-mentor for Young Scholars Master Class at the inaugural session in Organizational Communication at the 2008 CSCA.

Josh Boyd, Associate Professor, was named the department's nominee for the university's Charles B. Murphy Undergraduate Teaching Award.
Erina MacGeorge, Associate Professor, was named the department's nominee for the Liberal Arts Excellence in Education teaching award.
Marifran Mattson, Associate Professor, and "The Motorcycle Safety @ Purdue Campaign" has been awarded $27,770 by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for their project titled "Reimplementing and Extending the Motorcycle Safety @ Purdue Campaign." Also, she received a CLA PLACE grant of $3,675 for an engagement project titled "Engaging the Greater Lafayette/West Lafayette Community About Motorcycling Culture and Safety." Dr. Mattson also received a Purdue Student Grant for Community Service/Service Learning of $620 for a project titled "Motorcycle Safety at Purdue." This proposal was submitted with the graduate students in COM 676M: "Designing and Implementing Health Campaigns" and their partner organization, American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) of Indiana. Mattson also became a Community of Service Learning Faculty Fellow and was awarded a $5,000 grant for a project titled "Extending Service Learning Initiatives Associated with the Motorcycle Safety Campaign: Designing and Testing A Prototype Serious Video Game With Target Audience Members in the Community."

Patrice Buzzanell, Professor, was named by the National Communication Association as an Annual Spotlight Teacher. There will be a panel dedicated to her at the 2008 NCA conference in San Diego, where current and former students will be speaking about her and sharing stories. |
Jake Jensen, Assistant Professor, received a Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering (RCHE) seed grant ($23,901) for his project "Health literacy in underserved, pre-diabetic populations." He also received a Top Paper award in Health Communication for the 2008 ICA conference in Montreal. The paper is titled "The persuasiveness of gain- and loss-framed messages for encouraging disease detection: A meta-analytic review." The paper is co-authored with Dan O'Keefe of Northwestern University.
James Tyler, Assistant Professor, had six papers published or accepted for publication in Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Self and Identity, Teaching of Psychology and Social Cognition. He also published "In the eyes of others: Monitoring for relational value cues" in Human Communication Research.
John Greene, Professor, authored or co-authored "Cognitive models of message production" in Communication and social cognition; "Action assembly theory" in the 2008 International
encyclopedia of communication and "Information processing" in the 2008 International
encyclopedia of communication, published by Blackwell.
Jeong-Nam Kim, Assistant Professor, received a Research Incentive Grant of $1,200 for compensating one graduate RA to prepare and facilitate survey data collection.
Pat Rochon, Assistant Professor, is one of five new members of "Purdue's Community of Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program" who presented views and information on Jan. 14.
Melanie Morgan promoted to Associate Professor. Dr. Morgan is the course supervisor for COM114, the university's presentational speaking course. |
