Papers, Publications and Honors

Lisa Hanasono, Ph.D. student, was awarded by the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) the Henry and Chiyo Kuwahara Memorial Scholarship. This $5000 award is given to a graduate student who demonstrates academic excellence, dedication toward the pursuit of civil and human rights, and a strong commitment to the Asian Pacific American community.

Jennifer Gill Rosier, Ph.D. student, co-authored "State of the context: Listening in education," in the International Journal of Listening.

Mark Di Corcia, Ph.D. student, was awarded the Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship for 2008-2009 from the College of Liberal Arts.

Vidhi A. Chaudhri, Ph.D. student, co-authored "The Press as Agent of Cultural Repair: A Textual Analysis of News Coverage of the Virginia Tech Shootings" in the Handbook of Crisis Communication. The Handbook is expected to be published in 2009. Chaudri also published with Ph.D. student Jeremy Fyke in Place Branding and Public Diplomacy, "Rhetoric in hostile diplomatic situations: A case study of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad 's rhetoric during his 2007 US visit."

Alda Norris, Ph.D. student, was to be inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society on Dec. 7.

Suzy D'Enbeau, Rebecca Dohrman, and recent graduate Ashley Jones Bodie received a top student paper award from the Applied Communication division at the National Communication Association 2008 Conference for their paper "Life is calling. How far will you go?": A Thematic Analysis of Peace Corps Volunteers' Narratives."

Jerri Faris, Ph.D. student, designed a service learning project for 45 honors students. They are learning about the Reentry Court by attending court, reading about Problem Solving Courts, having a "pizza night" with the judge, and then developing, practicing, and giving presentations about the court and its impact on the community. The students will thus learn through "real life" presentations and help raise community awareness about the Reentry Court. Their presentations will be given in local high school government classes, at the Optimist Club, a local retirement facility, a community Diversity Roundtable, and other public venues. Faris was awarded a $550 Service Learning Grant from Purdue to fund this project.

Jennifer Bernat, Ph.D. student, presented a paper, "Violence in Movie Sequels: Testing a Prediction Based on the Principle of Desensitization," at the 2008 NCA conference.

Colleen Arendt, Ph.D. student, presented papers, "'An Officer First and a Nurse Second': The Impact of Rank on Military Nursing and Traditional Healthcare Relationships," and "Women Don't Belong in Engineering': Using an unCONVENTIONal Narrative to Expand Socialization Theory," with fellow graduate students Natalie Litera and Rebecca Dohrman, at the 2008 NCA conference.

Lalatendu Acharya, Ph.D. student, presented the paper "Deciphering Entertainment Education" at the 2008 NCA conference.
