If I use my own design, what are the requirements?

If you decide against using the standard design (see the previous question for more), then there are certain standards to which your own site design must adhere.  Most of these are not CLA nor even Purdue restrictions, but are standards imposed by the World Wide Web Consortium (http://www.w3.org/) and observed by all major Web browsers in order to ensure that Web content is equally accessible to all visitors regardless of their operating system, browsing software, or physical disabilities.

For more information about Purdue's Web design standards, including accessibility and compliancy with the American with Disabilities Act, visit this site: someplace.org

Expectations for CLA Web sites are listed here:

  • The design must be CSS-based XHTML 1.0 transitional.  A CSS-based design goes a long way toward ADA compliance, but it also has the benefit of being much easier to maintain and modify in the future.
  • The design must not rely on JavaScript for usability.  JavaScript can be a great way to enhance the user experience, but it must never be employed in a way that is vital to the function or navigation of a Web site.  If the design uses JavaScript, it must downgrade gracefully for visitors with scripting disabled or not supported.
  • The design must not rely on style sheets for visibility.  A pure CSS-based design means the site will be perfectly readable for visitors with style sheets disabled, or with their own style sheets imposed.
  • The design must feature the Purdue University signature in the top left-hand corner of every page, at a minimum size of 121 pixels wide by 46 pixels tall, and the image must link to the Purdue home page at http://www.purdue.edu/.
  • The design must feature the CLA signature in the top left-hand corner of every page beneath the Purdue signature, at a minimum size of 359 pixels wide by 32 pixels tall, so the tagline “voices • communities • cultures” must be legible, and the image must link to the CLA home page at http://www.cla.purdue.edu/.
  • The design must include a footer on every page with links to the Purdue home page, the CLA home page, Purdue Directories and Searches, Campus Maps, and the University Calendar, as well as copyright information and an equal access/equal opportunity statement.
  • The design must use the Verdana font family and must feature black and gold as its primary colors.  The official Purdue gold is Hex color code #B1946C, and the trim tan color is #E0D5C5.
  • The design must include a search box on every page.
  • The design should feature controls to allow the visitor to increase the text size as well as offer a printable view of every page.

Please note that these requirements apply to every new Web site in the College of Liberal Arts, and not just those developed and maintained through Serena Collage.
