Write Of Way

Written Musings on Writing

Saturday, January 31, 2004
It's Saturday morning and rather than being excited by the possibility of reading the Saturday NY Times and drinking coffee, I find that I would much rather go back to bed. The only problem is that it doesn'nt seem like a viable option since I've already been up and about for 2 hours! Maybe it'll all be better when the 3rd cup of coffee kicks in.

I knew it would happen at some point, I will now have to do all of the things that I told people I would do when hell froze over! I woke up this morning to a temperature of a balmy -4 degrees. Yes, that is the actual temperature and not the wind chill which was -20 the last I checked. So I guess today will be a day for flannel pajamas, wool hunting socks, and lots of warm hot beverages!

Sitting in the Village Coffee House. I am supposed to be working, but instead I have spent the last hour chatting with friends, drinking coffee, and checking email. Who says wireless is such a great thing?

I think I'm going to
get rid of some books, get a refill, and work a bit.

Today's Dilemna
Ok, so there is this book that I am using in my research. It is clearly a racist text that deals with eugenics. I used to own a copy of it (someone gave me a copy because I refused to buy it and thus support the author), but it has somehow become lost in the madness of the last few months. So is it unethical for me to go to the bookstore, buy a copy, use it for a day, and return it because I refuse to have the author(s) make one red cent off of me?

For all of those who taunted me for not having an RSS Feed HERE IT IS!!

I finally finished Toni Morrison's Love, while it was not her greatest work (but I think her worst work would be better than some people's best). I will write more about it later. My goal this year is to read more for pleasure. Thinking that this is just as important as reading for research, I will start posting some brief reviews here to keep myself honest.

Things have been pretty hectic in these parts lately. Not the bad kind of hectic that I had grown accustomed to, just run of the mill hectic. But the hectic time should be over. I say tentatively should. For that reason, writing will be resuming. I am going to spend some quality time with Toni Morrison's Love tonight to try to get it finished for my book group meeting tomorrow night. Curling up with a coffee and a good book sounds like a plan when there is snow on the ground and more forecasted.

I wish that I could say that I was writing today, but I can't. This is one of those days when there are 40 things to do and none of them includes writing. I'm meeting with P this afternoon to talk about our weekly writing meetings. Supposed to have some kind of outline, hmmmm guess I better get something on paper. I have a kind of organizational chart spread evenly between my head and my MacJournal but something more tangible might be a good thing.

Madly multitasking tonight. I have cooked dinner, eaten, done dishes, prepped for class, and am now preparing for a MOO session to work on a collaborative piece about queer identity in cyberspace, all while trying not to fall asleep in my 3rd cup of coffee of the evening. While I didn't get any writing work done tonight I am making up for it this evening, right?

Nothing! Set up some meetings, organized my all too busy schedule for this week and read email.

What do I need to do today?
Finish setting up my office (at home).
Look over my draft of chapter 4 (electronic) and see how complete it is now that the lastest version is missing in action.
DRINK LOTS OF COFFEE AND DIET MOUNTAIN DEW.

That sounds like enough for today, right?

Since my body has gotten the idea from somewhere that 5:30 is the appropriate time to wake up lately, I may as well take advantage of it. So here I sit waiting for the coffee to brew at 5:48 a.m. What I want to take the first few minutes to do is jot down some organizational notes of things that I need to do in the next week and then look over Chapter 4 to make sure that the changes have been made electronically.

Here's a question. Is it insomnia if you actually do sleep for a few hours?

Update:
In the last 5 hours I have:
Consumed an entire pot of coffee and a ham and cheese sandwich
Mapped out my Fall 2004 course
Found, lost, and recreated electronic comments on a student paper
Read lots of email (and answered a few, including one I probably should not have)
Scanned lots of blogs
Planned out the steps for "finalizing" the edits on chapter 4 after realizing that my USB drive is missing in action and my latest edited electronic version is MIA (good thing I still have the hard copy).

Another update:
Gave up on finding the electronic copy and found the hard copy instead.
Finished setting up my desktop machine and the webcam while I was at it. Now that I have an office by myself I can leave it on all of the time.
Took a nap.
Went to the market.
Called it a day!

Well today is the first day of the new semester and it's time to get back to the work of writing. Now all I have to do is to find the chapter that I was editing before things got wild and the house caught fire! I also need to do some final organization in my new office. So maybe the next day or so will be spent organizing in preparation for writing. It probably doesn't help that I've been up since 4:30 this morning and even after 3/4 of a pot of coffee I feel the need to sleep!

Welcome to the new year. I really slacked off on posting here after the year went to heck in a handbasket, but I made a resolution to have a better year. This means that I will definitely be doing more writing work. I am currently in the process of setting up a new office space at home so as soon as that's done there can be no more excuses. Look for frequent updates!!
