Write Of Way

Written Musings on Writing

After an afternoon nap :-) I went to B&N to meet a colleague to work on a grant application. After working with her for about an hour I headed home played chase me through the snow with a very big dag (my own) and buckled down to do a little work. I drafted about 3 pages of the deadline from hell article (only about 5 pages to go) and played around with some grant narrative type stuff. I purposely set a deadline of the 7th of February for a grant proposal draft so that I didn't have to worry about it right away, but it's always easier to work on something that is not pressing (at least it is for me).

Now I've decided I need some down time. I am going to watch a bit of the boob tube and then head off to bed early with a copy of Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson so that I can hopefully wake up chipper in the morning (yeah, that's gonna happen).

I woke up way to early this morning! I was in bed by 2 last night because I was just wiped out from too much football (no, there is no such thing!) I woke up this morning at 5 a.m. and forced myself to go back to sleep only to awaken at 6:45 cranky but alert. That was almost 3 hours ago and I am still cranky! I fell off of the caffeine wagon and made one cup of full strength caffeinated coffee, thinking that might improve my mood and get me writing. Will it work? I'll let you know. I'm gonna pop in the LOTR soundtrack (no I am not a geek) and see if I can call on the faeries to guide my keyboarding fingers.

So far this morning I have updated the techmentoring web page (added documentation for tomorrow's workshop) and written a letter of recommendation for one of my old students. I have also harassed the mysterious kb via email :-)

Just a thought, how many people make a post and then see a small error and feel an obsessive need to fix it lest people think that you're an idiot? Am I procrastinating again?

Ok, so I am up early this morning and I have every intention on spending the entire day working. I will avoid the office at all costs. I have already started things that have to be done before I can write. But, I have just made an executive decision, it will all have to wait until Monday or Tuesday at least. I am going to work on the super deadline article (mentioned yesterday) until its done and then go back to doing other things.

Talk about morning pressure, I woke up early this morning and decided to check email while coffee was brewing and I got a real eye opener! There was a reminder email that an article I am working on was due on the 15th (no coffee needed now)! The editor was kind enough to give me more time to finish it up, it's a good thing that deadlines tend to be fluid. Ouch! I guess I better get cracking.

So after 2 days of tag board being down I went ahead and switched over to zonk board for quick posts from visitors. Use it!

On my drive in to work today I started thinking about an article that I have wanted to write for a long time on sex work, never been quite sure if I wanted to go at it from a feminist angle or a rhetorical one and I'm still not sure, but as I was driving the article started to write itself. I got campus about 30 minutes before the workshop started, walked to Beering, sat down, took out a notepad and in 10 minutes I had 3 single spaced handwritten pages! I guess this means that like it or not this essay is gonna get written. Interesting. Now if I can just make myself work on the stuff that I am supposed to be working on I'll be good!

Certain things scare me. For instance, today I was looking at referring sites for my writing and webcam site and saw that several of the hits came from google searches for things like "webcam + pajamas" and "watch me on my webcam". I wonder how very surprised these folks were when they found my site :-)

Ok, today I am up at a more civilized hour and there is no need for me to go into the office. I am going to pack up my laptop and a couple of projects and head over to Barnes and Noble to get some work done. There will be no phones, no televisions, and no networked computers to distract me. I usually kvetch about B&N being the only place in town that isn't wireless internet ready, but today (and many days) that may be a good thing.

I have been in a real writing slump lately and this is going to be the day that I break it!!

Ok, a friend of mine woke me up at the ungodly hour of 10 a.m. to fax me something that I had requested (some friend). Yes, 10 is an ungodly hour when you don't normally go to bed until 5 or 6 a.m. I am naturally nocturnal and have been since childhood.

While I can read, brainstorm, and research during the day nothing that I write really makes sense unless it is written after the sun goes down. The bulk of my writing is done after 10 p.m. For the last week I have been waking up way too early to work on administrative and teaching duties and because of that I haven't been able to do any writing because my ENTIRE day gets thrown off when I have to get up at an unnatural hour. Having given up caffeine (for the most part) doesn't help because I can't even force my body into artificial "awake mode". Well, as it is 11:30 and I am still awake I guess I will work on some non-writing related activities and know in my heart of hearts that this too will be another no writing day :-(

Well Friday did bring a sense of accomplishment as I saw my prospecti off into the great unknown. I did get some vegging out done :-) and now I feel the need to return to a state of panicked working. Now I just need to prioritize the work on the 2 drafts that I need to get done this month. Sounds like a good time for a coin flip!

On Monday I finished up the book prospectus and dropped it off on campus to be copied (mass distribution and all) but because of the holiday it wasn't finished today :-( So tomorrow I will brave the elements and go pick up my copies and put them in the mail. I am going to reward myself with a veg out day or two and then get to work on some stuff that needs to go out this month. As the old cliche goes, No rest for the weary!
