Dr. B's Blog!

Friday, June 27, 2003:

Geesh, blogging folks like to keep you honest! I'm back to blogging. The summer has been filled with dissertation and prospectus defenses. That has left me little time for class planning or scholarly work. But eith way its actually been pretty interesting. What all of this defending and has told me is that we certainly need to cover certain kinds of theory in ENGL 605 this Fall.

So I have 16 weeks and if we break them up thematically I think 4 weeks of 4 themes is doable. In no particular order and with no particular degree of commitment I think that we can do:

Seminal C&C theory- Selfe and Hawisher*(?), C&C Jornal (available online through science direct), Baudrillard-Simulacra and Simulation

Identity/Community Building- Virtual Community, The Wired Neighborhood, Life on the Screen(?), Haraway- Modest_Witness or "The Cyborg Manifesto", Natural Born Cyborg (?)

Race/Gender/& Sexuality and Tech. Theory- (Wired_Women*, Cybertypes, Technicolor*, Race in Cyberspace*, Literacy Theory in the Age of the Internet*)

Network Theory (this one may be replaced at a later date)- Linked: The New Science of Networks or Six Degrees: The Science of a Connected Age, The Moment of Complexity*

Just Because- Snow Crash or The Diamond Age
