Dr. B's Blog!

Monday, January 27, 2003:

In about 8 hours I'll be doing a workshop on blogs and a few of the attendees might even be reading this post. One of their first assignments as new bloggers will be to post a response to an article that they were given last week to the workshop blog which is linked in the right module --------> over there :-)

Wow, I just tried Knoppix on my home machine, which has been running WinXP and RH (currently 7.3) since I got it, and I like it. It's fast and it actually supports my integrated sound, something that RH never did. It has inspired me to install RH 8.0 to see if I can get sound! This is going to come in real handy at work since I have been wanting to get some of the GTAs used to a Linux environment. BTW I am posting this from within Knoppix!

Charlie Lowe at http://kairosnews.org has just given me a new way to waste more time. Knoppix Linux on CD. This distro runs completely from CD without having to be installed on the hard drive. My home desktop, notebook, and school server all all currently either dual booting Windows and Red Hat (or just running Red Hat in the case of the server) but I just can't resist trying this out because I would LOVE to be able to run Linux in the computer classroom. I'm going to try Knoppix out this weekend and if all goes well I can hold that working with Linux workshop that I have been dying to do. Linux is the OS of the future and with Lindows new agreement to license schools for $500 and free unlimited software I think that this is something that new teachers are actually going to have to learn. Sometimes I wonder if we just continue to raise the bar for technology use in the classroom everytime someone gets close to clearing it on a regular basis. Hmmmm....

It is just too cool that I am now listed on the Weblogg-ed list of educator bloggers! I find that I am easliy excited by such things. I think that building another online community through weblogs will give educators a chance to share pedagogical and theoretical ideas in a way that listservs do not. Why? Because many people do not subscribe to listserv for fear of being overwhelmed with individual (or digested) messages when they don't have time to read them. Blogs give you the chance to look at other people's thoughts when (or if) you get the opportunity.

Unread messages in my Inbox make me cold and frightened. I always feel like there is something that I MUST know contained in one of those messages and if I don't read them all I will miss it and something terrible will happen to me. This must be some new kind of documentable phobia.

On a happier note, I had a full house for this week's technology workshop and I heard good things buzzing in the halls afterward. I am sure that the other comments were kept out of earshot, but what I don't know won't hurt me, right?

Classes start next week and I find myself rushing to get everything done so that I can have a nice relaxing weekend (I know, I know, it'll never happen but one can hope). The new technology workshops for teachers new to the computer classroom start on Tuesday and I think that they are going to be a great resource. I've created a team blog for the participants and it can be found in the frame to the right of this post. I am still debating on whether or not to create a team blog for my 505 this semester. It could make it easier to me to respond. Gotta think about this one.
