The Asian Studies Program at Purdue University brings together an interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff, and students devoted to the study of China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. We offer an undergraduate minor that allows students to take advantage of the wide range of courses given in the College of Liberal Arts. Purdue currently has twenty-three Asian Studies faculty members teaching sixty courses in seven disciplines (Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology, and Art History).
Why Asia?
Asian Studies provides students an excellent focus for a liberal arts education. Asia has over half the world's population and its economies have grown faster than those of any other region of the world in recent decades. Asia is home to a rich variety of cultures, languages, economies, and political systems and is of great importance to the United States. Three major American wars in the twentieth century (World War II, Korea, and Vietnam) were fought in East Asia. The size of the continent's population, combined with strong economic growth trends, ensures that Asia will become increasingly important during students' lifetimes. Furthermore, focused study of non-Western languages and societies gives students a comparative perspective for understanding their own Western language and society.
An Asian Studies major is particularly appropriate at Purdue. Purdue has some 3,000 students who are citizens of Asian nations, providing a wealth of resources and connections for students in Asian Studies. A major or minor in Asian Studies gives students a foundation for graduate work in the humanities, social sciences, business, law, or journalism. Knowledge of Asia and Asian languages will prepare students for the wide range of careers in which international exposure, knowledge, and sensitivity are important.
