What did you enjoy about ASAM?

Before I took my Asian American Studies class, I didn't really have any strong opinions or knowledge of who I was concerning my dual ethnicity. Though, after taking this course, I started to truly appreciate my Asian heritage and grow more as an individual. It not only opened my eyes to the common and uncommon stereotypes in our society about Asian Americans, but also taught me how we, as an entire race, are depicted in everything from sports, to television and movies. However, I also learned that it is not all dark and grim for Asian Americans; but conversely, that there are an infinite amount of things to be proud of and embrace pertaining to our heritage and diversity.

Why would you encourage students to take ASAM classes?

Students, especially those who are Asian American, should consider taking an Asian American Studies course. It is important for all Asian Americans to understand how AND why they are portrayed by others and how we, as a community, can break down every barrier and stereotype to achieve literally anything we want to do. Even if you are not Asian American yourself, these classes are the BEST way to understand your fellow Asian American peers and where they're coming from; which will no doubt help you in whatever profession you are striving to achieve in the immensely diverse world we live in.

What did you enjoy about ASAM?

I loved the discussions we had in class. Everyone was encouraged to voice their opinion, and nobody was afraid to say what they wanted to say. It is such a dynamic course - various topics that cover everything from history of Asian Americans to movies, music, and TV shows.

Why would you encourage students to take ASAM classes?

As an English major student, I usually read written texts and study them carefully; in ASAM class, I learned to read the American culture - especially the parts that deal with Asian Americans - and enjoyed "connecting the dots"; it was amazing to watch how history and politics connect with pop culture.

What did you enjoy about ASAM?

I enjoyed learning about the untold stories of Asian American history. There were events that transpired both in the past and present that the general public was not aware about because not enough light was shed on the Asian culture. The class also provided a calm atmosphere with the instructors and the readings were not too tasking either.

Why would you encourage students to take ASAM classes?

I would encourage anyone who is looking for an interesting class that is not typical of other classes offered at Purdue. The course covers topics ranging from Asian American perceptions in the media to food and culture to Asian American history. I had a great time in both the introductory class and the advanced class. Being the first Asian American minor at Purdue, I will be able to use that degree to continue to make an impact on the Asian American community.
