Standards of Work

For courses listed on the student's Plan of Study, a minimum grade of "B" is required for all 500 and 600 level courses in the primary area(s) of emphasis. For students in the MS program, the required core courses constitute the primary areas of emphasis. For students in the PhD program, the primary area of emphasis is that which is so designated on the Plan of Study. A minimum grade of "C" is required for all other courses on the Plan of Study. If the same course is retaken, the latest grade will be used.

In order for a student in the MS program in this department to be admitted to the PhD program, a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 is required. For continuation in either the MS or the PhD program, a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 is required.

A course grade of "Incomplete" is only given when unavoidable circumstances such as prolonged illness make it impossible to complete course requirements on time. According to current University policy, an "Incomplete" grade automatically becomes an "F" if not made up by the 12th week of the second semester following the semester in which the Incomplete was received.

Early in the spring semester, each student's advisory committee will meet with the student to review his/her progress toward the degree sought. Information from this review is provided to the anthropology section faculty and to the Graduate Committee. In making this review, the advisory committee will consider grades, residence, duties, and performance on the departmental examinations. The anthropology section faculty and the Graduate Committee will consider the written reviews when making recommendations concerning financial support and continuation in the program.

The advisory committee also makes a formal evaluation of the student at the time of the final examination for the MS degree and at the time of the PhD preliminary examination, and also at the time of the final PhD examination.
