Plan of Study

The Plan of Study is a formal document listing courses that will qualify the student for the degree sought and which pertain to the areas of specialization or emphasis. It is developed in consultation with the major professor and advisory committee. The student submits the Plan of Study online via SSINFO with the assistance of the Graduate Secretary. For MS students, approval of the Plan of Study by the Dean of the Graduate School constitutes formal admission to candidacy for the MS degree. PhD students must have an approved plan of study on file with the Graduate School before taking the Preliminary Examination.

The Plan of Study may not include courses numbered below the 500 level (except by arrangement). Certain courses may be listed more than once on the Plan of Study and may be repeated for credit if the content differs each time that the course is given. It is advised that courses be spread among various professors so that the student may develop different perspectives and not those of only one or a few professors.

A change to a Plan of Study may be submitted online through SSINFO and must be approved by the major professor, the advisory committee, and the Director of Graduate Studies. This form is then submitted to the Dean of the Graduate School for approval.

The approved Plan of Study constitutes a contractual agreement between the University and the student.
