PhD
Students who have an MS degree in anthropology from this department may be recommended for admission to the PhD program by vote of their advisory committee. Students with a Master's degree from another department or university must take the diagnostic examination (see above) during their first year in residence. The examination will be taken at the same time that it is given to MS students in this department or, if necessary, by special arrangement if no MS students are taking the examination during a given semester. The diagnostic examination, as well as the completion of any course deficiencies specified by the advisory committee, must be completed before the student takes the PhD Preliminary Examination.
PhD students in anthropology must take a minimum of 48 semester hours of graduate-level courses (plus the dissertation) beyond the Bachelor's degree. The student (in conjunction with his/her major professor and advisory committee) will develop a Plan of Study with considerable depth in selected areas of specialization using courses and seminars in this department as well as other departments.
PhD students who have not satisfied the statistics requirement for the MS must do so prior to taking their Preliminary Examination. Courses taken to satisfy the statistics requirement do not count towards the 48 credit hours of coursework required for the PhD.
