Requirements for International Applicants

Aptitude Test Scores

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam is required for international non-native speakers of English. Applicants must score 550 or higher on the paper-based test, 213 or higher on the computer-based test, or 77 or higher on the Internet-based test in order to be considered for admission. In addition, applicants who take the TOEFL iBT must achieve the following minimum test scores: reading, 19: listening, 14; speaking, 18; and writing, 18.

As an alternative to the TOEFL, applicants may submit International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores of 6.5 or higher.

The Test of Written English (TWE) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE) are recommended but not required.

Financial Support:

International students are eligible for teaching assistantships and research assistantship and will be considered for departmental funding.

Students not offered financial support by the department must provide to the Purdue University Office of International Students and Scholars evidence of sufficient funds available to pay tuition and living expenses during their residence in the U.S.

Oral English Proficiency

Purdue University requires that any student whose first language is not English demonstrate adequate oral English proficiency before being assigned duties involving direct instruction of students. This is done by taking the Oral English Proficiency Program (OEPP) Speak Test. International students offered teaching assistantships at Purdue are expected to pass the OEPP Speak Test when they arrive on campus and before beginning the first semester of graduate study at Purdue.

The Test of Spoken English (TSE) can be also used for oral English proficiency certification purposes. The student must have achieved a score of 50 or higher, and the score can be no more than two years old. Purdue will also accept a score of 7 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for oral English certification.

For more information, please contact the Graduate Committee secretary, Patricia Mason, at patty@purdue.edu or (765) 496-7428.
