(Retired) Vice President, 1st Source Bank Corporation
Consultant/Vice President South Bend Enterprises
South Bend, IN
Maggie Kernan worked for 1st Source Bank in senior management for 20 years, retiring in 2006 to lead the start-up of the northern Indiana affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She is presently consultant and vice president of South Bend Enterprises. Kernan served a term on the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission and was Indiana’s First Lady from September 2003 to January 2005.
Kernan is a South Bend native and has worked in communications, human services, and marketing since graduating from Purdue. Serving as First Lady gave Kernan the opportunity to focus on issues about which she felt passionate. A longtime volunteer in her hometown and in various state-wide organizations, she has extensive personal experience as a mentor. Drawing on her experience as both a mentor and a business woman, Kernan created the statewide “Mentor Indiana” program during her 15 months as Indiana’s first lady. The goal of the program was to get students on the right track for graduation from high school, and to prepare them for post-secondary education or training.
Kernan also presided over the completion of the Governor’s Residence accessibility project, which began under the direction of former First Lady Judy O’Bannon, designed to make the Governor’s Residence accessible for people with disabilities.
Kernan is the former chair of the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Advisory Council.
