Activities and Opportunities
Does the Honors Program sponsor activities?
Yes. Each year the Honors Program sponsors numerous events in the "Honors Experience." We offer vouchers for select Purdue Convocations and community artistic events. In addition, we sponsor film showings, pizza parties, trips to theater performances, exhibitions, and museums throughout Indiana and the surrounding region, and a wide range of meetings with local and visiting faculty members in various disciplines. Each year we hold the annual Honors Colloquium.
Many of these events are informal and are organized quickly. If you drop by the Honors Office, we can always tell you of events coming up within the next two or three week period. Always check the Calendar for events as we schedule them.
All members of the Honors Program are eligible for all sponsored activities.
Are there opportunities for financial prize awards for students in the Honors Program?
Yes. Students in the Honors Program are eligible for two types of special cash prize awards. First, there are Honors Prize Awards. Each year CLA offers up to $11,000 in prize awards for Honors Students. These include the Outstanding Honors Senior Prizes ($1,500) and the Outstanding Honors Junior Prizes ($1,000). Numerous additional prizes are awarded annually for varying amounts from $200 to $700, at the discretion of the Honors Committee.
Each year at the Honors Colloquium, cash prizes are also awarded for the best spoken and poster presentations. These prizes range from $50 to $250 and are available only to participating Honors students.
What is the Honors Colloquium?
The Honors Colloquium is an annual event held in April in which Honors students present work they have done for Honors courses. Professors recommend work for the Colloquium, and Honors students may also submit work on their own. Any work completed for an Honors course over the previous two years (including projects for Honors Contract Courses) is eligible for consideration. The deadline for submissions is usually February 9, and all Honors students receive notice of the deadline through the Honors Newsletter and through various mailings. Additional information can always be obtained through the Honors Office.
The event is held in the Memorial Union during an afternoon, and refreshments are served. You are always welcome to come and see what other Honors students are doing in their courses. It's an excellent way to find out about courses you may be interested in taking.
One need not be a member of the Honors Program to participate in the colloquium. It is open to any student who has taken at least one honors course and maintains a 3.0 cummulative GPA.
