"My Home, Your War"
This film “offers an extraordinary look at the effect of the Iraq war through the eyes of an ordinary Iraqi woman. Shot in Baghdad over three years that span the time before, during and after the invasion of Iraq, this profoundly moving film brings a perspective that – until now – has rarely been available to U.S. audiences… While facts about the Iraq war garner much U.S. media attention, My Home – Your War is a deeply compelling account of something seldom discussed: how the Iraq war has created a situation where the rise of fundamentalism is putting women’s rights increasingly at risk.” [Produced in 2006 by Women Make Movies, 52 minutes]
Week 2: October 14 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.Place: University Hall 303
Discussion Leader: Professor Alicia Decker
"Lioness"
“Lioness tells the story of a group of female Army support soldiers who were part of the first program in American history to send women into direct ground combat. Without the same training as their male counterparts but with a commitment to serve as needed, these young women fought in some of the bloodiest counterinsurgency battles of the Iraq war and returned home as part of this country’s first generation of female combat veterans. Lioness makes public, for the first time, their hidden history. [Produced in 2009 by Room 11 Productions, 83 minutes]
Week 3: October 21 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Place: University Hall 303
"Enemies of Happiness"
“In September 2005, Afghanistan held its first parliamentary elections in 35 years. Among the candidates for 249 assembly seats was Malalai Joya, a courageous, controversial 27-year-old woman who had ignited outrage among hardliners when she spoke out against corrupt warlords at the Grand Council of tribal elders in 2003. Enemies of Happiness is a revelatory portrait of this extraordinary freedom fighter and the way she won the hearts of voters, as well as a snapshot of life and politics in war-torn Afghanistan.” [Produced in 2006 by Women Make Movies, 59 minutes]
Week 4: October 28 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.Place: University Hall 303
"Afghanistan Unveiled"
“In November and December of 2002, 14 young women, trained as video journalists and camera operators, traveled to rural regions of Afghanistan to interview their countrywomen. In the span of two months, they met and spoke with women eking out an existence in caves, women risking punishment by daring to appear on film and women whose lives and families had been destroyed by years of bombing and oppression.” [Produced in 2003 by Women Make Movies, 52 minutes]
